Evaluating Readiness to Apply

Pre-Professional Competencies (service orientation, social skills, cultural competence, teamwork, oral communication, ethical responsibility to self and others, reliability and dependability, resilience and adaptability, capacity for improvement)

  1. If I do not have much service outside of clinical settings, I have confirmed that the schools on my list are not expecting nonclinical service.
  2. If I am emphasizing research (i.e., it was either a Most Meaningful Activity or the activity I participated in the longest and have the most hours), then I am applying to schools that especially value research.
  3. My Activities section in my PIR demonstrates that I understand the physician’s role and patients’ needs.
  4. I demonstrate a consistent commitment to, measurable exposure of, and thoughtful, objective reflections on experience in a clinical setting such as shadowing, paid employment or volunteer work—i.e., situations where I interacted with and/or observed physicians and patients.
  5. I show increasing depth of commitment over time to a single project. Demonstrations of such commitment include taking a leadership role, pursuing academic work related to my co-curricular work, and/or engaging in similar work across multiple populations or in different settings.
  6. Clinical experience is at least one of my most meaningful activities I discussed in my PIR.

Thinking and Reasoning Competencies (critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, scientific inquiry, written communication)

  1. I have at least one letter of recommendation from someone in an academic capacity who knows me well and, therefore, can speak to my thinking, reasoning, and science competencies.
  2. I am able to describe specifically why my application makes me a good fit for each of the schools on my list.
  3. I know which of the schools on my list use CASPer, and I have practiced video interviewing with someone who is able to offer unbiased and critical feedback.
  4. In my PIR Activities section, I clearly articulate evidence of my motivation and vision for a patient-centered future.
  5. My Personal Statement illustrates that I understand the physician role and patients’ needs.
