Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant

Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant

Anesthesiologist assistants (AAs) work under the supervision of an anesthesiologist as members of an Anesthesia Care Team, in order to provide the safest care possible for patients needing anesthesia. They are highly trained professionals who have completed both a premedical curriculum as undergraduates and a master’s of science degree in anesthesiology. Furthermore, they must successfully pass the Certifying Examination for Anesthesiologist Assistants administered by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.

Professional responsibilities include but are not limited to pre-anesthesia health histories, physical examinations, establishing patient monitoring devices, interpreting monitoring techniques, securing a patient’s airway, and providing continuity of care prior to and after surgery.

Shadowing and Volunteering

All master’s programs in anesthesiology will require that you have shadowed an anesthesiologist, a CAA, or a CRNA for at least eight to ten hours.  Such shadowing is also an excellent way to help you discern whether being a CAA is the best career path for you.

The Application Process

Students interested in Anesthesiologist Assistant programs apply through CASAA, the centralized application service for anesthesiologist assistants.  CASAA opens in March. Many AA programs offer rolling admissions, so it is advantageous to apply early.

There are currently 23 master’s programs accredited by CAAHEP. Two new programs have recently applied for accreditation. You can find a current list of member programs as well as a list of which states license AAs at http://www.aaaep.org/.

Undergraduate coursework:

Professional Opportunities

Anesthesiologist assistants are in high demand. Currently 4000+ CAAs work actively in the U.S., even though they are restricted to the 22 states where they are authorized. The number of states that license CAAs will no doubt increase as the demand for affordable healthcare rises. In addition, the federal government allows CAAs to practice in veterans and defense facilities nationwide.
